Ozarks Literacy Council - Southwest Missouri
Mon, 06/29/2009 - 08:55
The goal of the Ozarks Literacy Council is to increase literacy in Southwest Missouri by providing free tutoring and learning services to those unable to read, write or compute at levels necessary to function fully and contribute successfully on the job, in their communities and in society as a whole.
Did You Know...
Low literacy is intertwined with a wide range of social, economic, psychological, and disability issues.
Poverty and family influence may be the most significant influencing factors in the lives of low literate citizens.
Over 30% of our nation's people are functionally illiterate, reading below an 8th Grade level.
Over 50,000 adults in Greene County, some 21%, do not have high school diplomas.
The eleven county region surrounding Springfield is one of the fastest growing regions in the country, averaging over 30% population increase per county in just ten years -- meaning that in this region there are over 165,000 low literacy residents.
Over 60% of American prison inmates are illiterate and 85% of all juvenile offenders have reading problems.
Over four billion dollars a year is lost annually in Missouri as a consequence of low literacy in the employment pool.
Low literacy is multi-generational. The reading level of the mother is the most accurate single predictor of the reading levels of children.
The most common reason given by dropouts for leaving school is, "I can't read."
THE GOOD NEWS IS. . .
Dramatic changes happen very quickly with the involvement of one-on-one volunteers, tutors and a caring and concerned community. Each personal victory is a triumph for the learner, the tutor, the community, and the future.
Registration: $25.00 which will include a take-home manual with information and tutoring tips, and will provide a six month membership in ProLiteracy America, our affiliated literacy organization, the recently merged Laubach Literacy Action and Literacy Volunteers of America.
Previously trained tutors are invited to attend for recertification at no cost.
Attention Prospective Volunteers:
Please note that posts in this section have been added by independent literacy programs. Please contact these organizations directly, as they are not affiliated with this site. Literacy Connections has not investigated these opportunities and does not necessarily endorse them.
