National City Public Library’s Literacy Services program provides free one-to-one and small group tutoring for adults whose reading or writing skills are below a ninth grade level. To qualify, an adult needs to speak and understand English at a conversational level. Both tutors and learners are required to make a six-month commitment to meet 2 hours per week. Tutoring is at the National City Public Library. For more information, please visit the Literacy Services office at the library or call (619) 470-5860.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Volunteers are required to be at least 16 years
old. All volunteers under the age of 18 will be required to obtain
parental consent.
Volunteers CANNOT be accepted if they have any misdemeanors relating to domestic abuse, child abuse, petty theft, and drug or alcohol abuse. Some fraud cases will require further investigation. Volunteers charged with any felony cannot be accepted.
Our volunteer jobs involve office work such as photocopying, laminating, stapling and record keeping. Craft preparation, book cleaning, and creating display boards are other jobs sometimes available. A Dewey Decimal test is offered for any volunteer interested in helping to shelve books.
Volunteers will sign in and out in the Literacy Services office. Hours will be tracked and entered in our database. All volunteers will be required to wear a Volunteer I.D. badge while performing their duties in the library or at library events.
If you are interested in volunteering, please visit the library or call National City Public Library Literacy Services at (619) 470-5860.
