Tutoring is still one of the most effective ways to promote literacy, and we definitely believe that tutoring enriches two minds. Get involved as an adult tutor, or if you are a student, consider spending some of your summer as a Cross Age tutor.
Adult Tutor
The Adult Literacy Program serves 250-300 adults in the Fairbanks community each year. We train and support community volunteers to work one-on-one with adult students in the areas of reading, writing, communication, math, and computer skills. All volunteers become certified tutors through ProLiteracy Worldwide after completing a 14-hour Tutor Training Workshop. In addition, tutors receive support through in-services, monthly Tutor Round-Ups, and quarterly newsletters and phone calls. The instruction is student-centered, and tutors and students work together to set realistic and attainable goals.
We offer five orientations throughout the year. Join us as we discuss adult literacy issues and how volunteer tutoring impacts your community. We will have a guest tutor/student pair come to talk about their experiences. You will learn how our tutoring program works as well as the details of our volunteer positions.
Visit our Adult Literacy page, call 907-456-6212 and ask for Rebecca or just stop in for more information and to get involved!
Cross Age Tutor
Tutoring is a great way to get some experience and build your resume if you don't want to work or are too young to work. We are looking for teens who are motivated, who like to work with young children, and who have strong academic skills. Job experience, letters of reference on completion of a tutoring session, and personal growth are just a few of the benefits of tutoring.
The Cross Age Tutor program consists of two components: training and tutoring. In the training, you will learn the fundamental ideas involved in teaching reading and math to children, how to plan lessons, and how to work with children. In the past, tutoring has been three days a week, and two four-week sessions have been offered through the summer. Tutors are welcome to participate in all four sessions (morning and afternoons in both June and July), or for any four-week session they choose. We do ask for a commitment to the full four weeks because once an elementary student starts the program, they need to build a relationship with their tutor and know they can rely on the tutor being here for them.
Visit our Cross Age page, call 907-456-6212, or stop in to the Literacy Council for more information and to get involved!
