Illiteracy is the lack of the basic listening, speaking, reading, writing or math skills adults need to solve the problems encountered in daily life and participate fully in their society.
About 27 million American adults cannot read well enough to complete a job application, to read a childs bedtime story, or to write a letter to a friend.
Asking for help takes courage. If you know someone who needs help, encourage him or her to call the Literacy Action Corps.
Literacy Action Corps, the local branch of Laubach Literacy Action, is a volunteer organization.
Volunteers of Literacy Action Corps:
train volunteer tutors to teach the Laubach method of reading and writing,
teach adult nonreaders to read and write, and
teach people from other countries to read, write and speak English.
You need only 2-3 free hours a week to become a literacy tutor. Once or twice a year, Literacy Action Corps holds a tutor-training session that will provide you with the necessary skills. The Student Coordinator then assigns you a student. Tutor training workshops are usually held in February and September.
