Drake University Adult Literacy Center

Our mission is to increase literacy, resulting in enhanced self esteem, daily living, and lifelong learning. Our motto is, "We serve the community, one life at a time." Our goal is to inform the community about the learning challenges faced by adult new readers and the benefits to the community of meeting the challenges.

Description:
Volunteer tutors provide one-to-one tutoring for one hour, once or twice a week. Volunteers make a one year commitment. Volunteers receive 7 hours of training and instructional materials to use.

We serve adults who need to improve their reading, writing, and/or speaking skills, as long as an appropriate volunteer is available. To enroll, adults need to call 271-3982 to schedule and interview and assessment. Enrollees pay only a $10 annual materials fee. We serve adults with dyslexia and/or learning disabilities.

History:
The Center has been a part of the Drake University School of Education since 1976, when it began with a grant from the US Dept. of Health, Education and Welfare. When the grant ended, dedicated volunteers, with the support of Drake faculty, have continued to serve the needs of adult new readers.
