Arkansas Literacy Councils
Readers age 18 or over who have the desire to tutor another adult one or two hours a week - or even a few hours a month - can make a huge difference as a volunteer adult literacy tutor or as a volunteer in other capacities for his or her local literacy council.
Volunteer tutors are trained to work one-on-one with adults who are reading below a fifth- to eighth-grade reading level. Tutors and students can meet at the local council or anywhere in the community at any time of day. In training, volunteers learn how to work with adults who need to read better and / or learn English as a Second Language (ESL).
If you want to become an ESL tutor, you only need to know the English langauge and have a desire to help the student. To request a referral to the literacy program closest to you, please send an e-mail to info@arkansasliteracy.org.
We will send you your local council's contact information and copy that council so they can get in touch with you as well. Or, you can contact your local council directly by using the search features at the Local Programs tab on their Web site.
Attention Prospective Volunteers:
Please note that posts in this section have been added by independent literacy programs. Please contact these organizations directly, as they are not affiliated with this site. Literacy Connections has not investigated these opportunities and does not necessarily endorse them.
