A pre-service training is required for all interested volunteers. Literacy Volunteers of America-Charlottesville/Albemarle
     LVA-C/A trains and supports volunteers who act as individual basic literacy and English as a Second Language tutors for adults 18 and over. Tutors and students meet twice a week for hour-long lessons based on the student's goals, interests, and level of skill. Our services are free and confidential. Caroline County
Caroline Literacy Council, Inc.
     The Caroline Literacy Council is in need of literacy and office volunteers. We provide free tutoring and materials to adults. Basic literacy, GED and English as a Second Language classes are offered. One-on-one tutoring is also offered. Tutor and computer training is held periodically through the year at the center. Office hours are 9:00am-1:00pm Monday-Thursday.

Hampton Public Library - Literacy Enrichment for Adults Program
     Basic literacy education and support services for beginning adult readers and non-English speaking adults through one-on-one tutoring by trained volunteers.Small group instruction for English as a Second Language. Computer-based self-study in wide range of subject areas including TOEFL, GED and American citizenship. Lending library with fiction/non-fiction titles, recorded books and work-related materials. Family literacy services to assist parents in encouraging their children's intellectual growth through sharing books and other family-based activities. Flexible scheduling based around library hours. Northern Viriginia. We teach English as a Second Language to Adults. We have 24 sites and are always in need of volunteer teachers, assistants and Coordinators.      One-on-one volunteer tutoring for adults.  1-2 hrs. weekly; Active & retired teachers welcomed but any well-read individual can tutor with our easy guidelines and excellent materials.  Never a fee to the adult who wants to learn to read and write or achieve a G.E.D.All materials furnished.

Roanoke Valley

The West End Center for Youth needs volunteers, ages 16 and up, to tutor children grades K-12 one hour per week in its after school Tutoring Program. Tutors assist children with homework assignments, basic math and reading skills while also serving as mentors, role models and friends.

LEARN!  PARTNERS IN LITERACY
     Being in one of the poorer regions of Virginia,it is important to get as many people involved as possible.  LEARN! is an all volunteer organization and most of our volunteers hold full time jobs making it difficult sometimes to meet the needs of the area. We welcome anyone with an hour a week to help us in our pursuit to provide learning for those in need.

Literacy Program of Clinch Valley Community Action
     The Literacy Program of CVCA provides one-on-one tuturing for adults with low reading comprehension skills. It also provides family literacy to families where at least one adult lacks either a high school diploma or GED, or has functional reading comprehension difficulties; and who have a child ages 2-7. Tutors are provided training and other support.
