Hispanic Literacy Awards and Links to Recommended Books in Spanish
With resources for Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated every year from September 15 to October 15. It is a time to recognize the many contributions of Latinos to life in the United States. Reading folktales, poems, fables and legends from Spanish speaking countries and books written by Hispanic authors are some ways in which you can join in the celebration.

Latino Facts & Statistics — The Tomás Rivera Policy Institute advances critical, insightful thinking on key issues affecting Latino Communities through objective, policy-relevant research, and its implications,for the betterment of the nation.

Latin America Data Base (LADB) — A news and educational service on Latin America. Has a section called RetaNet with resources for teaching about the Americas. Lesson plans by Diane Forsyth for grade levels 9-12 can be found in the Literature/Folklore section. An interactive project with kindergarten or first grade students. Comes with a bibliography.

Resources and strategies for creating a curriculum that reflects the experiences of migrant children. This article contains an annotated bibliography of fiction and nonfiction on migrant farmworkers.

Hispanic Literacy Awards


Américas Awards for Children's and Young Adult Literature — This award is sponsored by the National Consortium of Latin American Studies Program (CLASP). Links to an annotated list of past winners are provided.

Premio Fantasía Infantil — Since 1995, El Premio Fantasía Infantil is dedicated to the publication of books for children in Argentina.

The Pura Belpré Award — The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/a author and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.

The Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award — South West Texas University in San Marcos is the home for The Tomás Rivera Mexican American Children's Book Award that is motivating a movement to celebrate multiethnic literature and allow children to have a better understanding of who they are and what contributions they can make to this country.
