Walk-About Story

Jean Feldman, Ph.D.

All children will be motivated to read the walk-about story!

Excerpted from Wonderful Rooms Where Children Can Bloom!
by Jean Feldman, Ph.D.

Materiels

  • Butcher paper
  • Markers, crayons, or paints
  • Clear packaging tape

Directions:

  • Roll out a long sheet of paper.
  • Mark off 2' sections on the paper.
  • Let each child draw his picture and write his name in one of the sections.

Write the following chant in each section:

(First name), (name)
Who do you see?
I see (second child's name)
looking at me.

(Second name), (name)
Who do you see?
I see (third child's name)
looking at me.

And so forth...

  • Tape the paper to the floor with clear packaging tape. (You can also cover it with clear contact paper.)

Variations:
  • Let the children write and illustrate their own original stories using a similar format.
  • Have the children work together to write and illustrate a story. Hang the pages in the hallway. Tape a sheet of paper to the top of each page so other students walking down the hall will be curious and will want to lift the sheets and read the story.
