Skills:

  • Letter recognition
  • Understanding initial sounds
  • Building vocabulary

Materials Needed:

  • Language experience chart
  • Markers

Directions:

Select a letter and write it at the top of the page. Ask children if they know the name of the letter. Reproduce the sound together. Ask the children to think of a word that begins with that sound. As each child contributes a word, write it on the chart.

Encourage the children to add as many words as they can. Give them hints and riddles about words that begin with that sound. Read over the words together. Choose individual children to come up and underline a word they can "read."

Adaptations:

  • Use an overhead projector, dry erase board, or chalkboard to make letter charts.
  • Hang letter charts on a classroom wall for recall.

  • Choose a different child to illustrate each letter chart, then let them take it home.

  • Put these charts together to make a giant book.

  • Have children cup their hands around their ears as they reproduce sounds.

  • Pass around a hand mirror. Encourage children to look at their mouth movements as they reproduce various sounds.
