"In fairy tales witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch." Witches, as our hero learns, hate children. With the help of a friend and his somewhat-magical grandmother, our hero tries to expose the witches before they dispose of him. Ages 7-12. Product Description: Meet a hero, a wise old grandmother, and the most gruesome, grotesque gang of witches imaginable! Roald Dahl is one of the most beloved storytellers of all time, and his books have been children's favorites for generations. Puffin is proud to offer a strong new look for nine of our classic Roald Dahl titles. The distinctive cover treatment, with new art by Quentin Blake, will make these books easily recognizable. In addition, Quentin Blake's funny, quirky illustrations now appear in all of the books. So turn the page and you'll be sure to have a Dahl-ectable summer! Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - another great Dahl story! This story has three parts: the first - scary and gruesome, the second - funny, full of adventure and predictable, the third - warm, unexpected and full of promise and excitement. What stays with me is the love between the grandson and the grandmother - they fully accept one another despite their differences and they enthusiastically enjoy life and each other. The ending is left open for the imagination - not taken to a close like so much these days where nothing is left ... Read More Rating: - A GemI love this book! I was at my cousin's house when she had book club, and having read this many times, I forgot how great it was! Luckily, I chose to read it again, and fell in love for the second time! With characters that only Roahld Dahl himself could come up with, this book is a find. An eccentric grandmother, a curious boy, and evil creatures, this book is masterpiece. One of my favorites in the Dahl collection, thank you to the author!!!! Rating: - The WitchesThis is an excellent book for 3rd grade readers. It is very exciting and keeps my child interested. I recommend this book. Rating: - Disasterously wicked, with a smileThis will continue to be one of the most dazzling examples of children's literature. How can you not love something of so much horror that comes off with such humor and charm? In classic Dahl fashion, a boy is horrible orphaned to be left with his grandmother, a woman who belives in the dangers of witches. What follows is a hotel adventure that manages to make witches villainous and yet as properly British as possible. It's tongue-in-cheek and continuinly clever. ... Read More Rating: - Danielle's Favorite BookI think this is a really good book. It is mainly about a nine year old boy who has a very sweet grandma and sets off to stop the witches from vanishing all the children. It is not just funny, it is also frightening. The part I like the best if when the witch turns the boy into a mouse.
